China Lodging Group, Limited was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in January 2007. The Company is a multi-brand hotel group in China with leased, manachised and franchised models. Under the lease model, it directly operates hotels typically located on leased properties. Under the manachise model, it manages manachised hotels through the on-site hotel managers and collects fees from frnachisees. As of December 31, 2012, the company had 465 leased hotels, 516 manachised hotels and 54 franchised hotels in operation and 80 leased hotels and 330 manachised hotels under development. The Company offers four hotel brands that are designed to target distinct groups of customers. These brands include, JI Hotel, Starway Hotel, HanTing Hotel and Hi Inn. JI Hotel is a standardized mid-scale limited service hotel product which targets mature and experienced travelers. Starway Hotel is a mid-scale limited service hotel product which targets middle class travelers. HanTing Hotel is the Company's economy product which targets knowledge workers and value- and quality-conscious travelers. Hi Inn is a budget hotel product which targets practical and price-conscious travelers. The Company competes mainly with other economy hotel chains as well as various local lodging facilities. The hotel industry in China is subject to a number of laws and regulations, including laws and regulations relating specifically to hotel operation and management and commercial franchising, as well as those relating to environmental and consumer protection.
